Talking Metformin and Stomach Issues

I was on Metformin for almost 2 years. While I lost quite a bit of weight(which I had gained from being on steroids for Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia) After being on it for a long period of time I began to develop stomach issues such as pain, indigestion, heartburn, and when I accidently took my pill just after eating some ice cream I experianced such severe abdominal pain I had to be admitted to the hospital. While some medications are good for acute symptoms such as when you get into a car accident, I am becoming a firm believer that no medicine can be good for long periods of time for your body. You were not born taking them, so after a while your body gets used to the external help and or contamination that it either becomes lazy and cannot perform without it or, it turns on it self and you in turn have to take more medications to counter act everything else that starts to happen(which is good for the drug companies bad for your body and pocket book) You are often told that Metformin will improve ovulation and lots of women get pregnant with its assistance, but during those two years my husband and are still without pregnancy or child. I realize every person is different, but it was disheartning and still is to be without a child in our lives.
I work in the medical field and after years of being at the mercy/butchery of conventional medicine I have taken my health into my own hands and started researching what I need to do to either fix, maintain, or understand what is happening with my body. While I used to think that natural remedies, natural medicines, or anything termed natural I thought was "hippyish" but through my own research and through my body being pumped full of toxic chemicals I no longer think as such. I hope this helps!

I couldn't agree with you more BLG1007! I am also a firm believer of natural healing, and that all medicines have their own side effects!

I am in much agreement as well! I have been on way too many medications since I was the age of 11... due to acne, PCOS, depression and etc. The thing that bothers me is one med can lead to having to take another.
I used to think that the people that did things naturally were strange, however now I am in much agreement for it is so much better for your body in the long run!

In general, healthy young people do not have many side effects. people who take metformin have stomach discomfort, nausea (feeling like you are going to vomit), or diarrhea. If these are a problem for you, you can lower your dose by half a pill for a few days before going back up to the regular dose. If you don’t or can’t eat for some reason (you get sick or you have to have surgery), don’t take metformin. Do not drink large amounts of alcohol while taking metformin. If you stop taking metformin for a few days, it’s important to restart the medication at a low dose and build up to your regular dose gradually so you don’t have as many stomach side effects.

Stomach problems are quite common with Metformin, especially at the beginning, but they usually tend to subside after the first month or so on the mediction. How long have you been taking Metformin? Many doctors start patients at a relatively low dosage and then have them increase it after the system becomes used to the lower amount.

I would suggest that you call your doctor, or your pharmacist, to discuss the situation rather than attempting to take any kind of OTC medication with it.
