hello Dr,
I have been diagnosed with PCOS a couple of years ago and have been on various medications to treat.

Initially, my Dr placed me on progesterone cream to help balance my estrogen, but it turns out the progesterone converted to estrogen and resulted in a very large fibroid that I am currently dealing with.

My insulin test results have come back very high and, initially, my Dr. put me on Metformin. however, the side effects were too much to bear. I was then placed on Actos but was unable to lose weight or regain my periods.
Very recently, my Dr. has added Byetta to the mix. Byetta has helped me lose some weight and has also decreased my appetite.

The forum discusses Metformin a lot and how this is the drug to take. I am not exactly clear on how the 2 drugs that I am taking work to help my PCOS.
Can you explain?

Thanks in advance,
Terri

Terri,

Actos and Byetta are not typically used for PCOS. Actually, I have not had someone mention them being used for it before you! However, Actos specifically is said to help reduce insulin resistance. Byetta, is said on it's website, to help the pancreas make the 'right amount' of insulin. Byetta is also said not to cause your blood sugars to go too low, which is good for a person who is not specifically diabetic.

Are your blood sugars high sometimes? Did your doctor try Metformin ER- sometimes that causes less intestinal discomfort for people who are sensitive to regular Metformin.

The Insulite PCOS System can be very effective in helping bring Insulin levels down, balancing out hormones, and losing weight. Perhaps you could go to pcos.insulitelabs.com to find out more about it if you haven't looked at it yet.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to write again with any other questions or comments you might have.
