View Full Version : New Here-Trying to Lose Weight

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2004. I have been thin most of my adult life. I worked out regularly and watched what I eat most of the time. I put on more than 30lbs the summer of 2009. The weight gain was fast, but the loss has anything but. I have been trying for the last year to take it off. I have tried everything, working out 6 days a week doing an hour of cardio everyday. For a few weeks I ate only soup, then it was just salad and fruits. No matter what I tried, the scale did not move. I am 5'10 and 180lbs which now makes me overweight. My doctor didn't think it was a big deal and has been no help. I am 31 now, friends and family all attribute the weight gain and difficulty losing it to being in my thirties, but getting older doesn't mean your body doesn't respond to diet and exercise. It didn't really occur to me that PCOS might be an issue. I hadn't really thought of it much since I was diagnosed, I was just told when I want to have children I may need to take fertility drugs. I have not been on birth control in about 2+years and my periods come just about every month, though I still can't predict when. The facial hair has become more severe in the last year or so. I started to piece it all together recently as I realized PCOS could be behind my trouble with my weight. I have also suffered from hypoglycemia coincidentally, since 2004 which is when I found out I had PCOS. I am getting married next year and I want to be a fit and fab bride and have children soon after. I just bought Insulite, though it is costly and I'm not sure if its something I can commit to long term. How could this system help me lose the weight and get my PCOS under control?

So going over the Insulite guide. I am all for eating more fruits and veggies, I have been making every effort to do that in recent months. But the nutrition plan is pretty insane. No sweets, pasta, bread, juice, potatoes, cereal, pancakes etc. I mean why bother to eat in the first place. I am looking for something realistic. This sounds too extreme and not practical for real life. How would someone do this and still interact and live with others?

There are still some doctors that only address this as a fertility issue. However, this is not the case and it is important to understand how this affects the body.

In most cases, the underlying insulin resistance leads to hormone imbalances that affect the cycle, can lead to an increase in testosterone and other androgens, causing symptoms such as acne, excess facial and body hair, and infertility or difficulty conceiving.

In addition the insulin resistance leads to weight gain and difficulty managing weight. Insulin resistance vastly reduces the insulin sensitivity of cells, which impairs the processing of glucose through the cell wall for
conversion to energy. As a result, glucose remains in the blood stream, causing elevated levels of blood sugar, some of which is sent to the liver. Once there, the sugar may be converted into fat and stored via the blood stream throughout the body. This process can lead to weight gain and obesity, key factors in creating PCOS. The supplements support lowering insulin and glucose and help reverse the insulin resistance and how your body processes food. In addition, it is crucial to also address this with nutrition and exercise. I know you have tried a lot to get this under control and many times, it is a matter of putting it all together

I understand your concern for these changes. We do not expect changes to be done overnight and we do not remove all of these foods completely. We do prefer non-processed whole foods and limiting carbohydrates to 60-80 grams a day. Because of the underlying cause, your body may not be able to handle higher carbs and you can continue to not be able to manage your weight. You are doing great with exercise and with the options we give, you will not be depriving yourself of nutrients or calories or healthy food options.

The foods that you mentioned, "sweets, pasta, bread, juice, potatoes, cereal, pancakes" all will increase glucose and stimulate the increase in insulin and promote weight gain. You may have these in small quantities but also taking into consideration your carbohydrate intake. Or every once and a while use these as a treat for doing well the other times.

If you are preparing meals, you can increase to two non-starchy vegetables or make an additional one for yourself, instead of having the starchy one. When eating out, it is not too difficult to make slight substitutions to a meal and many places now offer healthier options, that could be appropriate.

Another thing is that if you are eating with family or friends, they too can benefit from these changes and focus on a more whole foods diet. Again, you can have some whole grains but taking into account the quantity you use and the carbs.

I would recommend that you keep a food diary for 7-10 days and put your food into www.fitday.com as this will break down your food intake into calories, carbs, protein and fat. It can give you an idea of where changes may be helpful.

I encourage you to give it a shot. I know that we ask a lot but we also know that today's typical diet is what is increasing these problems in addition to diabetes, heart disease, etc.

These tips can help you in weight loss.
Running is the best exercises because it helps you burn the calories.
Just in 30 minutes a person can easily burn 300 calories.
Walking, Sprinting and adding hills or an incline can burn 180 calories in 30 minutes.
Bicycling and Swimming of 30 minutes can burn 400 to 500 calories.

Hi dear,
for losing the weight you should try the following tips
Do exercise regularly
Running, swimming and jogging
Drink plenty of water
Control your diet
Take more boiled vegetables
Don't take more cholesterol and fatty foods
Eat fresh fruits especially citric fruits
Drink fresh fruits juice
Take green tea
and use fish oil

I was diagnosed with PCOS 5 years ago....ever since then I feel like half of girl :( My periods are regular,but I do have problems with acne,
I am not fat,but I do have belly problems,and it seems that Im always gaining weight around my belly and also I do have regular pain in my ovaries,sometimes I cant even sleep....
Please,please tell me what should I do to resolve this issue? Is it possible to get rid of this condition??? Because I honestly think this is taking a lot from me and makes me very unhappy :(

Hello and thanks for writing in. I am sorry to read that you are struggling with this. We understand how difficult this can be for women. It affects many aspects of ones life.

The symptoms can be very frustrating. It is not uncommon to experience what you are currently experiencing. However, the pain you feel in your abdomen, have you had this evaluated? If not, I would recommend speaking to your doctor to be sure there is nothing more going on. If you have ovarian cysts, it could be this that you are feeling but you will want to be sure.

I also adopted them and really enjoying the results. Along with these tips,
I'm also using honey with bit warm water for the purpose. Try it also.
