Hi Doc!!! For the first time I do not feel like I am alone. As a teenager I felt like an absolute freak and no one really took the time to explain to me that it ok to have facial hair cause it did not make me who I am. I have been through some really dark and painful times due to all the hair on my face.

For the first time I am at a point in my life where I am secure enough to say I have a full beard not something I like but I have learned to accept and stopped being at war with my beard.

I have tried everything and I mean everything, plucking, waxing, electrolis, creams, laser hair removal and nothing seemed to remove the hair permanently. After 2 and a half years of laser treatments every second month from my upper lip to below my breasts and the doc said sorry there is nothing more we can do. Yes it did retard it abit but it soon came back. So I have settled to shaving once a day.

My question to you is now that I am loosing weight will the hair go away or reduce once I am at a healthy weight?

Look forward to hearing your answer…

Len

Dear Len,
Thanks for posting and sharing your experience. Believe it or not, I have heard stories like yours before! I am sorry that you spent so much time feeling down on yourself because of the hair.
Do you have PCOS? Are you losing weight from your own program or are you using the Insulite PCOS System? Losing weight alone certainly can't hurt with regards to your hair growth. I could see how losing weight could positively affect your insulin sensitivity and thereby improve your hormonal balance (androgen levels).
The addition of anti-androgenic herbs & food like saw palmetto, nettles root, and pumpkin seeds could help too. (Some of these and other powerful herbs are components of the Insulite PCOS System.)
Does this help? Please write in anytime and let us know how you are doing.

Hi Doc... thanks for replying to my post and answering my questions.

I have PCOS and have choosen to take Provera for 10mg 12 days a month and then addition 250 mg of metformin twice a day. I have been reading through loads of posts and letters under the aske the Doc section. and have picked up a few things... I try and eat at least 2 hand full of pumpkin seeds a day but i have not gotten arround to using the other herbs as they tend to be very expensive here.

I am not currently using the system however i am looking to get it in the future. However I am using the basic prinicles of low carb diet and exercise when I can. I have been doing this for a month and a week ....

I was not going to weigh myself until i visited the Doctor late next month but today I was forced to for an insurance thingy and I am happy to say over the month and week i have lost 5kg 11 pounds.... we are very excited!! My boyfriend has joined me in this mission being a great source of support and encouragement. I would have been happy to have even lost just a few grams as i have been through the extreme dieting before and not keen on doing that again.

Look forward to hearing from you again.

Hello again, Len,
Congratulations on your weight loss! How very encouraging! We tend to encourage people to lose weight on the slow side here at Insulite Laboratories: 1/2 to 1 lb per week. This helps your metabolism re-adjust so you don't get rebound weight gain.

Metformin is very commonly used for PCOS, some women respond well to it, others notice no difference or don't like the side effects. I like the herbal, nutritional, and lifestyle (exercise) approach because this approach helps change things from the inside out. With metformin or the birth control pill or other medications, once you stop the medication, the PCOS symptoms tend to return. It's too bad the herbs are too expensive for you right now. Keep in mind that Insulite does offer a 90-day money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with the results within 90 days, you can get your money back (excluding shipping and handling). The tricky thing with this is that like I said before, hair growth tends to be one of the later symptoms to improve.

Another good source of info besides these Ask the Doctor forums is this website: www.pcos.insulitelabs.com.

Take care and talk to you again soon!

From reading the two articales on the people who asked about excess hair growth..which I have and have been diagnosed with pcos. that the excess hair will never go away. I have nutrionist who is specialized in pcos. I specifically asked her on my last visit if the facial hair will go away when I lose the weight. which losing weight has been an on going struggle for me.She has advised me it go way. Growing up nobody has ever said anything to me about my facial hair. Until one day when I went to the salon to get my nails done for a bouquet and the hair dresser said something to me about my facial hair. which I had a boyfriend at the time and I didn't even notice it. since then I have been getting my face waxed and it thick and noticable. I am extremely self concous about it and hate going out in public. I have been on spirolactone..however that did not work.

Yes, our experience is that the hair that exists won't go away unless it is removed, but you can prevent NEW hair growth by doing things like changing your diet (low carb) and exercising and using supplements (herbs and nutrients) to help reverse insulin resistance and balance the female and male hormones in the body. As you might know, insulin resistance is the underlying cause of PCOS, and insulin resistance contributes to hormonal imbalance via insulin's effects on the ovaries. The hormonal imbalance of PCOS is typified by increased androgens (male hormones, like testosterone and DHEA). Exercising and reducing carbs can help reverse insulin resistance, as can some herbs and nutrients. Write back if you have any other specific questions!
