:rolleyes:Hello,
I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 months ago. In January it was discovered that I had a large cyst on my left ovary (about the size of a golf ball). I went to a repro endro for the procedure to have the cyst removed. Every since I was 13 I've experienced facial hair, chest hair and acne. For years no one could tell me what was going on and thought I might have CAD. When I was a teen my cycles were slightly irregular (a few days late or early) and I had a harder time keeping weight off. They put me on the pill at 15 for a short time, which did hardly anything. When I was 21 I went on the pill again and Aldactone. The pill and Aldactone helped my facial hair slow down and the acne go away some, but not entirely. I eventually went off the Aldactone in my early twenties and was on various bc pills. In 2001 I started taking Yasmin until 2006 when I got married. Three months after getting married I went off the pill. My cycles were completely normal for the first three months after that and then got more off (four of five days late, or three or four days early). Once my repro endro took out my cyst (the large one on my ovary) my period came almost on the dot every 27-28 days up until I got pregnant (so April 2008 to August 2008).

In 2000 I was also diagnosed with thyroid nodules and was put on Syntroid for four or five years until another Endro decided there was no reason for me to be on Syntroid for just nodules. The Syntroid had increased the speed of my metabolism and maintained my weight. Ever since I’ve been off the Syntroid though my thyroid levels have been absolutely normal, when they were low when I first started on the drug.

I have never been extremely over weight, only 10 pound over when I hit puberty. I've been considered really skinny to some now, but I'm at normal weight. I have always exercised regularly and have eaten extremely healthy; except for a few splurges here and there (I have had an addiction with sugar). My biggest issue has been acne and hair growth. I am now going into my sixth week of being pregnant (which wasn’t planned) and my acne is just as bad. I tried using natural progesterone to balance my hormones out in the last six months (prior to getting pregnant) and my skin still remained horrible. I’m now concerned about my developing baby. I’ve been eating whole foods, taking prenatals, drinking a ton of water, exercising moderately, consuming low amounts of sugar, caffeine and no alcohol or tobacco. I was taking very good care of myself prior to getting pregnant, but like I’ve said acne and hair galore! I’ve been reading about higher chances of miscarriage with women with PCOS and have experienced some mild cramps here and there (like my period is about to start) about two to three times a day.

Like I said at the start, my repro endro diagnosed me with PCOS when he was investigating that large cyst. He did a glucose test on me and hormone tests, and those all came out normal. So…I’m wondering why am I experiencing acne so much, is there a danger that something could be affecting my child?

Hey - I am not a doctor, but I am a doula and have learned quite a bit about pregnancy. Your best shot at avoiding a miscarriage is to eat a strict low carb diet. If it were me, and I had managed to get pregnant even with pcos, I would eat zero processed carbs / caffeine / sugar, period. You want to keep your blood sugar as steady as possible during those important first months. Also - you need to have your thyroid checked on a regular basis while you are pregnant to avoid any potential birth defects. Your chances are good, and it's wonderful that you were able to get pregnant, one of the biggest, scariest hurdles we all face with pcos.
