Keep Your Resolutions Attainable in 2010

December 31st, 2009

One of the problems with keeping New Year resolutions is that many people tend to make them too ambitious. So, for 2010, why not resolve to stick with simple, attainable steps for losing weight, or keeping it off, to help you better manage your PCOS symptoms.

Vary your workouts, for example. Try ice-skating, take up swimming or buy a new exercise video and burn a CD of your favorite dance music to move to at home.

At parties throughout the coming year, focus on the chance to catch up with family and friends, rather than hover at the buffet table and nibble.

Walk when the sun’s shining, whatever the season. The sun boosts levels of the mood-enhancer called serotonin, which improves the way you feel.

Re-Connect with your Food for Better PCOS Health in 2010

December 30th, 2009

Why not adopt a new attitude to food in 2010 to help improve the management of your PCOS symptoms and avoid other serious conditions? It isn’t as hard as it sounds.

In today’s hectic, multi-tasking world, it’s easy to forget just how much you’re eating or to use food as a comfort in these economically anxious times. As a result, many people gobble high-carbohydrate food which provides quick rushes of pleasure rather than long-lasting nourishment.

That way lies weight gain and health problems linked to PCOS like heart-damaging metabolic syndrome (syndrome x) and pre-diabetes. Both these latter conditions can lead to type 2 diabetes if they are allowed to develop.

To steer clear of them, exercise regularly and eat a healthy, balanced diet to control your weight. Try slowing down at meal-times and re-connecting with healthy food. At first, choose one nutritious meal a week to eat slowly so you can really appreciate it. You could just find you’re enjoying less food so much more that you extend the habit.

Eating for Energy and Weight Control

December 29th, 2009

Try to make a point of eating wisely for energy in 2010 to improve management of your PCOS symptoms.

After finding time for a healthy breakfast, consume frequent, small, nutritious meals, say every three or four hours, for the rest of the day. They are much better for your body’s metabolism – and weight control – than big lunches and dinners.

Regular, small, healthy meals will give you energy throughout the day, without recourse to fattening snacks, by helping to keep your blood sugar levels from crashing.

Don’t forget that liquids also provide energy by keeping you hydrated. Drink plenty of water and remember that fresh fruits and vegetables count towards fluid intake, too.

Drink More De-Caf and Tea in the New Year

December 28th, 2009

Eating low-sugar cereal may seem like a healthy choice in 2010 for better weight control and improved management of PCOS symptoms. But if you still drink a cup of caffeinated coffee with breakfast, you could be doing more harm than good in the long run.

Canadian researchers say drinking non-decaf with cereal can cause blood-sugar levels to rise as much as 250%. Over time, high blood sugar levels may damage arteries and the heart. And many women are already vulnerable to cardiovascular disease because of their PCOS.

When you ingest caffeine and follow it with food that’s carbohydrate-based like cereal it can lead to the hormonal imbalance called insulin resistance. This latter condition exacerbates the symptoms of pre-diabetes – another condition to which PCOS women are prone. If neglected, pre-diabetes can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes, which, in the vast majority of cases, is irreversible and may require daily injections of insulin.

Why not try tea for a change? It has less has less caffeine than coffee. And even decaf still isn’t entirely free of caffeine.
