Go Walnuts

August 26th, 2009

Walnuts are the only nut – and one of few other foods – that offers sizable amounts of a crucial type of heart-healthy polyunsaturated fat called alpha linolenic acid, or ALA. This is important because those of us with PCOS are vulnerable to heart disease

An omega 3 fatty acid, ALA improves your ratio of HDL “good” cholesterol to LDL “bad” cholesterol, as well as reducing inflammation, which, in turn, helps to block the conversion of cholesterol into artery-clogging plaque.

The ALA in walnuts also plays a significant role in boosting brain and cognitive function, with low levels of the acid associated with depression and other mood disorders.

Bear in mind that walnuts are high in calories, so don’t consume too many. Try to eat a handful each or every other day.
