A Large Waist “Reduces Lung Power”
Excess weight around the middle is a classic symptom of PCOS and a new study suggests those extra pounds can limit the ability to take a deep breath.
Abdominal obesity is defined as having a waist circumference of greater than 35 inches (89 cm) for women and 40 inches (102 cm) for men. The research team found a strong association between abdominal obesity and decreased lung function regardless of overall body mass index. The link remained when researchers excluded those with existing cardiovascular or respiratory diseases, which are also closely linked with excess weight caused by PCOS.
One explanation may be that fat tissue increases inflammatory processes in the body, leading in turn to respiratory problems, according to the French study, which was reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
