T
Testosterone
The most potent of natural male hormones (androgens) that
promote the development of male secondary sexual
characteristics. Testosterone is also present in smaller amounts
in females, where it is responsible for libido, energy, and
mood. In women, testosterone is produced in the ovary, the
adrenal glands and peripheral tissues. In men, testosterone is
produced primarily in the testes.
Thiazolidinediones (TZDs)
A new type of drug used to treat Type 2 Diabetes by improving
insulin sensitivity in adipose tissue (tissue comprised
primarily of fat cells), liver and skeletal muscle. Examples
include Avandia (rosiglitazone), Actos (pioglitazone), and
Avandamet. Unlike other Diabetes drugs, these do not induce the
pancreas to secrete more insulin.
Triglycerides
The major form of fat derived from food consumption.
Triglycerides are also produced by the body. Elevated levels of
triglycerides are associated with atherosclerosis.
Type 2 Diabetes
Also known as insulin-resistant Diabetes, non-insulin dependent
Diabetes, adult-onset Diabetes, late-onset Diabetes and
maturity-onset Diabetes. This hyperglycemic condition occurs
when insulin that is produced by the pancreas is unable to be
used by the body due to the cells’ resistance to insulin.
