Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA)
The generic name for the pharmaceutical drugs Provera, Cycrin
and Amen. It acts to inhibit release of sex hormones influencing
follicular growth and ovulation. Used in contraception.
Metabolic Syndrome
Also known as Syndrome X, a group of risk factors that
substantially increase the chances of developing coronary artery
disease and Type 2 Diabetes. Characterized by central or
abdominal obesity, high blood lipids (mainly high triglycerides
and low HDL) hypertension and fasting blood glucose >110 mg/dL.
Metformin (Glucophage)
An oral medication that lowers blood glucose (sugar) by
inhibiting production and absorption of glucose in the liver and
intestine and promoting insulin sensitivity through peripheral
uptake of glucose; used for treating Type 2 Diabetes.
Miscarriage
The spontaneous ending of a pregnancy by loss of the baby before
the 24th week of pregnancy.
Multifactorial
Multiple factors that may cause a certain disorder.
